Try to get your cows to a condition score of 3.5 when they are dried off and maintain this condition throughout the dry period. Thin cows should be given extra feed for the last third of their lactation, the dry period is not the time to put weight on your cows.
Lift the feet. When the cows first go dry lift their feet. Not all of them will need to be trimmed but this is the best time to identify early problems and sort them out.
Depending upon the time of the year apply fly control treatment.
Keep Dry Cows on fields where they can readily be observed and in the summer away from trees and standing water which will attract flies.
Consider worming your cows when they first calve to restrict the challenge they have to face from lungworms and gut worms.
